Thabit ibn Qurra (826-901) war einer der originellsten Köpfe aller Zeiten. Als Mann von umfassender Bildung, der Arabisch, Griechisch und Syrisch sprach und seit dem Mittelalter selbst ins Lateinische übersetzt wurde, war er ein vollendeter Repräsentant des Goldenen Zeitalters der Abassiden. Ihm verdanken sich neue Kapitel in der Geschichte der Mathematik, der erste Fortschritt in der Astronomie über Ptolemaios hinaus und die erste radikale Kritik an der aristotelischen Ontologie im Namen des mathematischen Idealismus.
Angesichts seiner historischen Bedeutung ist es das Ziel des vorliegenden Bandes, seine bisher nicht bzw. nicht kritisch edierten Werke zu veröffentlichen und historisch-kritisch zu untersuchen. Rund ein Dutzend seiner kleinen mathematischen und philosophischen Schriften werden hier ediert, übersetzt und kommentiert.
